Cuba Receives African Roots Exposition

8 – January, (ACN).- The "Africa, The Third Root" traveling educational exposition opened Tuesday at the San Francisco de Asis Convent in Havana. The show was donated to Cuba by one of its coordinators, Luz Maria Martinez Montiel. The show includes graphs, sculptures, paintings, instruments, carvings and photographs inspired in The Slave Route project created by UNESCO to revalue the African contribution to Latin America and the Caribbean.Martinez Montiel informed the Fernando Ortiz Foundation will house the exposition whose main objective is to denounce the greatest holocaust suffered by humankind during four centuries.Martinez said that this history should be included in the public education curriculum in the countries of the region.Jose del Val, director of Project Mexico from the National Autonomous University of Mexico (UNAM), highlighted the contributions of several nations to organize the exposition and especially the effort and talent of his compatriot Luz Martinez Montiel.Miguel Barnet, president of the Cuban Artists and Writers Association (UNEAC) and the Fernando Ortiz Foundation, praised the exposition on a very significant topic for Latin American and Caribbean peoples.Barnet said that for Cuba, more than a third root, Africa is one of the essential sources of its culture, on par with Europe and Asia, since it put an indelible stamp on it and contributed that component of resistance that defines it so well.
